Background and Objectives: Nutrition assessment of individuals and populations has been used in itself and as a part of health statistics for a long time. It is used to judge and predict malnutrition, deficiency disorders, disease and treatment outcomes etc. There are continuous and many on going studies being conducted at various parts of India to assess nutrition status. The study aimed to analyze the ongoing trends in nutritional assessment of seemingly-disease-free Indian Adult population in India.
Materials and Methods: A systematic literature review according to PRISMA guidelines was conducted. The database was collected from PubMed. The database included studies from the year 2020. 4 search queries related to nutrition assessments specific to India were made. Studies that met the eligibility criteria i.e., methods and tools used in India for nutrition assessment of general, healthy adult population; were shortlisted and studied. Analytical representations were done with aid of VoS viewer and R Studio.
Results: A total of 736 results of the queries were identified. While focusing on the aim and objectives of the study these were screened and sieved down to eighteen. These were then studied for the tools used, the frequency and repetitiveness of these tools, and how these tools were used singly and in combination to produce better interpretation of the sample population’s nutrition status.
Conclusions: As initially predicted, there was a lack in assessments and studies concerning normal adult population. The studies generally focus on specific age groups, physiological conditions, disease conditions or particular nutrients while studying nutritional assessment. Also, even in these studies, there is a lack of a generalised format or tool for nutritional assessment. There lies a need for a standardised format or a tool universal for nutritional assessment of the seemingly healthy adult population of India, so as to ease prediction and prevention of malnutrition of any kind. |
