The NFHD adheres to the strict definition of authorship as prescribed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Authorship is not merely a credit but a commitment to the integrity of the published work. Failure to meet all four criteria below disqualifies an individual from being listed as an author.
Authorship Criteria
To be listed as an author, an individual must have fulfilled all of the following criteria:
- Substantial Contributions: Made significant contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
- Drafting and Revision: Participated in drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
- Final Approval: Provided final approval of the version to be published; AND
- Accountability: Agrees to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
All individuals who meet these four criteria must be listed as authors. Those who do not meet all criteria should be acknowledged in the "Acknowledgements" section.
Author Contributions Statement
To ensure transparency, we require an "Author Contributions" section in the manuscript, detailing the specific contributions of each author using their initials. For example: "Conceptualization: A.A. and B.B.; Methodology: A.A.; Formal Analysis: C.C.; Writing – Original Draft: B.B.; Writing – Review & Editing: A.A., B.B., C.C." We recommend using the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) terminology for consistency.
Corresponding Author Responsibilities
The corresponding author is the primary point of contact for the editorial process and assumes full responsibility for the manuscript throughout submission, peer review, and publication. Their specific responsibilities include:
- Pre-Submission Verification: Ensuring that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and agree to its submission.
- Communication Hub: Managing all correspondence with the journal, including sharing submission confirmations, decision letters, and reviewer reports with all co-authors.
- Data and Material Integrity: Verifying that all data, figures, materials, and code comply with the journal's transparency and reproducibility standards. This includes ensuring original data are preserved for reanalysis and that their presentation is accurate.
- Conflict of Interest and Ethical Disclosure: Collecting and disclosing conflicts of interest from all authors, confirming ethical approvals, and providing clinical trial registration details.
- Acknowledgement of Editorial Assistance: Disclosing the use of any editorial or writing assistance (e.g., from a scientific writer or commercial editing service). This must be acknowledged in the manuscript with details of the service provider and source of funding, in line with EMWA (European Medical Writers Association) guidelines. Such assistance does not typically constitute authorship.
Changes in Authorship
Any change to the author list (addition, removal, change of order) after initial submission requires strong justification and must be approved by all original authors, including those being added or removed.
- Pre-Acceptance: Changes are considered only in exceptional circumstances and require a formal, signed statement from every author agreeing to the change.
- Post-Acceptance: No changes to the authorship list are permitted after the manuscript has been formally accepted for publication.
All authorship change requests must be directed to the Editor-in-Chief and will be handled in accordance with COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines.
Acknowledgements
This section should list all contributors who do not meet the full ICMJE criteria for authorship. Examples include:
- Individuals who provided technical support, writing assistance, or general supervision.
- Department chairs who provided only general institutional support.
- Funding sources (grant numbers should be included).
- Participants who assisted with data collection.
All acknowledged individuals must be informed of and consent to their acknowledgement.
Third-Party Submissions
Manuscripts must be submitted by one of the authors. Submissions by third parties on behalf of authors (e.g., by institutional PR offices, pharmaceutical company representatives, or other agents) are not permitted. The corresponding author is responsible for the submission process.
Resolution of Authorship Disputes
Any disputes related to authorship brought to the attention of the editors will be managed in strict accordance with the flowcharts and guidance provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
