The NFHD is committed to promoting the complete, transparent, and reproducible reporting of research. Adherence to community-standard reporting guidelines is mandatory for all relevant manuscript types and is considered a critical part of the editorial assessment. Failure to comply may result in the manuscript being returned or rejected.
Authors must submit a completed reporting checklist relevant to their study design alongside their manuscript. These checklists will be made available to Editors and reviewers and must be uploaded as a Supplementary File titled "Reporting Checklist."
Mandatory Reporting Guidelines
We require authors to consult the EQUATOR Network (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research) for guidance on which guideline to use. The following are the minimum required guidelines for specific study types:
- Randomized Controlled Trials: CONSORT
- Please use the CONSORT Checklist and include a completed flowchart in the manuscript. The trial must have been registered in a public trial's registry.
- Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: PRISMA
- Please use the PRISMA Checklist. The PRISMA flow diagram must be included in the manuscript.
- Additionally, authors must provide the full search strategy for at least one major database (e.g., PubMed, EMBASE) as a supplementary file. This allows for the replication of the search.
- Study Protocols (e.g., for RCTs or Systematic Reviews): SPIRIT or PRISMA-P
- Protocols for randomized controlled trials must follow the SPIRIT guidelines.
- Protocols for systematic reviews must follow the PRISMA-P guidelines.
- Observational Studies (Cohort, Case-Control, Cross-Sectional): STROBE
- Meta-Analyses of Observational Studies: MOOSE
- Qualitative Research: COREQ or SRQR
- Diagnostic/Prognostic Studies: STARD or TRIPOD
- Pre-Clinical Animal Studies: ARRIVE
- Case Reports: CARE
Statistical Methods and Reporting
The rigorous application and transparent reporting of statistics are fundamental. We strongly advise authors to consult the SAMPL (Statistical Analysis and Methods in the Published Literature) guidelines for general statistical reporting principles.
Manuscripts must include the following in the Methods section:
- A full description of the statistical methods used, including software and version.
- Justification for the choice of each statistical test used, confirming that the data meet the test's assumptions (see the SAMPL guidelines for more information).
All manuscripts will be checked for statistical soundness by our reviewers. The Editors reserve the right to send manuscripts for additional specialist statistical review if deemed necessary.
