Overview
The NFHD fully supports global initiatives to improve transparency and quality in the reporting of clinical research. In accordance with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations and World Health Organization (WHO) standards, the journal requires prospective registration of all clinical trials in a publicly accessible registry prior to the enrollment of the first participant.

Definition of a Clinical Trial
The NFHD adopts the ICMJE definition of a clinical trial as:
“Any research study that prospectively assigns human participants or groups of humans to one or more health-related interventions to evaluate the effects on health outcomes.”
This definition includes Phase I–IV clinical trials and applies to all health-related interventions, including nutritional, behavioral, pharmacological, surgical, or device-related studies.

Acceptable Trial Registries
Clinical trials must be registered in a publicly accessible primary registry recognized by the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) or listed on the ICMJE website.
Acceptable registries include, but are not limited to:
  • ClinicalTrials.gov
  • ISRCTN Registry
  • EU Clinical Trials Register
  • Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT)
  • Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR)
  • Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR)
  • Pan African Clinical Trial Registry (PACTR)
The registry must be open to the public, managed by a non-profit organization, and must assign a unique trial identification number.

Reporting Trial Registration
Authors must include the Trial Registration Number (TRN) and date of registration at the end of the manuscript abstract.
If the study protocol has been previously published, it should be cited within the manuscript.

Registration of Systematic Reviews
The NFHD also encourages the prospective registration of systematic reviews in appropriate registries such as PROSPERO or equivalent national databases.
The registration number should be provided at the end of the abstract when applicable.

Editorial Oversight
Manuscripts that do not comply with these registration requirements may be returned prior to review or rejected. The editorial board reserves the right to verify registration details in publicly available registries.
